The Hidden Work Behind Every Show

There’s no such thing as a perfect show. Every live performance and even live sound itself involves compromise.

You do the best you can to meet any challenges the venue presents: with the tools and crew you work with, by applying your knowledge and experience to get the best possible result, which is an audience that feels like they’ve seen a perfect show. The kind of show where, even if something does go wrong, the audience never realizes it.

Preparing Before the Show

To get that result (whether you’re mixing FOH or monitors), preparing for any eventuality ASAP is critical: building simple, reliable, and repeatable signal paths; labeling everything; reducing complexity; carrying backups for anything that might fail, and testing everything daily. So that potential problems, small or large, are addressed and prevented.

The first steps: familiarizing yourself with the artist’s music, how they want it to sound live, their technical rider, and the gear and systems each performer uses on stage.

Next: fix what you can before it fails. There are two parts to this: identifying and eliminating any potential points of failure from the source on out and recommending changes to the band’s gear and technical rider that could cause problems.

How effectively you can do that obviously depends on the time allotted for pre-production and how willing the artist (and/or management) is to make those changes. Cost is always a consideration, and musicians are often reluctant to alter their stage setup if it works for them, even if it’s not as reliable as you’d like.

Again, everything is a compromise.

Troubleshooting Under Pressure

Now that you know what you’re up against, you can develop a plan and workarounds for issues you know will, or might, crop up (and for those you dearly hope won’t).

The more prepared you are, the better you can troubleshoot when the pressure’s on. And the pressure is always on: during shows, but also before, after, or on a travel or off day.

Gear doesn’t care if you had other plans. Venues aren’t always completely transparent about (or aware of) any on-site issues (pre-existing or brand-spanking new).

Fixing what’s broken or could break isn’t something you want to deal with on show day. That’s why you thoroughly advanced the show: you already know the venue is prone to RFI or EMI interference, a line array element on the right-side hang is dodgy, and there are a few bad channels on the snake running from the stage to FOH. Or that the venue just got a new monitor and/or FOH desk that A) they’re still fine-tuning routing for, and B) you don’t have a file for.

You can deal with that because everything you can control is sorted and planned for; every system you’re deploying is reliable, racked up and ready to go, with spares on hand, and redundancy in place.

In short, you can troubleshoot without anyone in the audience (and ideally anyone in the band) knowing something went sideways.

Reliability Over Complexity

Let’s revisit those potential failure points we mentioned earlier. The ideal way to deal with them is to eliminate as many as possible. That’s why reliability wins over complexity every time, with every system.

When it comes to signal flow, cable management, pristine, predictable sound reproduction, and ensuring the true tone of each player and the entire band comes across without compromise, having the right tools for the job is key.

Traveling light is sensible, but not at the expense of sound and reliability. Having multiple workhorse DIs like Radial’s JDI on hand doesn’t hurt, but if a source requires an instrument- or task-specific box, be it a DI, preamp, FX unit, line isolator or signal transport system to sound its best, without fail, trading a bit of space for peace of mind is a small price to pay.

Complex, multi-function devices aren’t inherently bad. But devices that solve specific challenges make diagnosing and fixing issues on the fly easier and have fewer failure points.

That’s particularly important when choosing a DI: determining whether you need an active or passive DI, mono or stereo, if a source-specific box for acoustic or electric guitars/basses or digital sources like laptops/playback, and what DI is best for high-output sources, and for preserving signal integrity and tone over long cable runs.

So, what kind of issues are we talking about, why do they happen, and how do you deal with them?

Let’s look at a few of the most common scenarios:

Starting at the source, your power source. Dirty power and damaged or consumer-grade power bars are problematic on- and off-stage, increasing the potential for hum, buzz, and EMI/RFI interference.

Backup Plans

Whether it’s because your gig has changed (or changes constantly), your rig evolves: new pedals, a second amp, an interface, an amp sim; the possibilities are endless.

Each addition adds functionality and expands your options on stage, but can create unintended complications. When adding those options, it’s important to consider the most effective way to route signals to ensure pristine sound reproduction and a fluid on-stage or in-studio workflow.

Routing isn’t just about getting signals from point A to point B. It’s about what happens to them along the way and how you route them in real-time, during performance.

Ensuring Reliability & Redundancy, Without Complexity

Feature creep isn’t something that just applies to a device or software platform. Taken as a whole, your system, from the instrument out, offers you plenty of opportunities to add elements, resulting in feature creep on a system level.

Every extra feature or device adds potential points of failure; additional cabling and power supplies, the potential for noise, interference, and the alteration of your signature sound.

Routing Problem #1: Switching Between Amps

The most typical scenario here is a setup where you’re sending one source to two amps and need to switch between and/or blend the sound of those amps. Even if both amps are connected to the same power source and you’ve done everything possible to eliminate noise, you may still end up with hum and buzz in one or both amps and/or unwanted alterations to the true tone of your instrument.

Obviously, physically adjusting the level of your amps mid-performance isn’t ideal. You could jury-rig a solution using a Y-cable, but it’s better to address all the issues via a single solution.

Solution: BigShot ABY

Routing Problem #2: Switching Between Instruments

Using one amp and need to switch between two instruments?

The blunt force approach is adding an amp or physically unplugging one instrument and plugging in another. That works, but it increases the potential for failure and noise, and adds to your channel count (which can be problematic when console real estate at Monitors or FOH is an issue).

It also means you have to mute or turn your amp’s volume up and down to avoid pops and clicks, and adjust your instrument level each time you transition between one instrument and the next.

Solution: BigShot i/o

Routing Problem #3: Switching Between Two FX Pedal Chains

Nobody wants to look like they’re tap dancing when making changes on their pedalboard while the band and crowd wait for them to sort themselves out. It’s not a good look from the stage or audience perspective and ups the chance of human error, noise, and, frankly, distracting yourself from the job at hand.

Solution: BigShot EFX

FOH is Your Sound

Consistency at the source is everything. From show to show, and venue to venue, room characteristics, PAs, and even your engineer, can change – but your sound doesn’t have to. The bottom line is that a signal that’s clean and predictable always translates better than one that’s just louder or more complex. The goal isn’t to give FOH something to fix; it’s to give them something that already works, every night, without fail.

Your signature sound starts at the source – with your instrument and the way you play it – and that’s where a high-quality preamp comes in.

What leaves the stage and hits the PA isn’t just sound; it’s your intent as a player. The greater your ability to shape your tone, balance dynamics, and present a coherent, musical signal to FOH, the more truthfully that will translate, clearly and consistently.

What a DI Does & What it Doesn’t

At this point, you might be thinking, ‘Isn’t that what a DI does?’

The answer is yes, but no.

Think of it this way: A DI sends a snapshot of your sound. A preamp allows you to adjust the contrast, brightness, and other parameters that result in a stunning ‘image.’

DIs are necessary and useful tools, but their purpose is to convert your unbalanced instrument-level signals to balanced mic-level signals that the console and PA can handle, and to split that signal so you can feed an amp or monitor system at the same time.

What they don’t do is allow you to shape or manage your sound, which means your FOH engineer often needs to compensate for inconsistent gain, a harsh or thin tone, and any external factors that crop up on a night-to-night, venue-to-venue basis.

By contrast, a preamp allows you to actively shape your sound before it reaches the console and PA. To manage gain, refine EQ, control dynamics, add warmth or grit, and address problem frequencies in a consistent and repeatable manner. Instead of handing off a raw signal and hoping for the best, you’re delivering something that’s already been dialed in.

That’s particularly important with acoustic instruments, basses, and any axe equipped with piezo pickups instead of magnetic pickups.

What’s the difference?

Magnetic pickups hear the vibration of strings, not the body of an instrument, which, with an acoustic guitar, for example, makes a huge difference. While magnetic pickups are resistant to feedback and produce a warm, sustained sound for electric guitars and basses, when used on acoustics, they’re less picky – so to speak – in reproducing how your specific axe sounds, and the nuances and ‘feel’ of your playing.

Piezo pickups capture the resonance of your entire instrument, which allows them to produce a more natural tone. However, they can also present challenges, including a harsh tone and/or feedback. To leverage their strengths and address their weaknesses, a source-specific preamp is ideal, allowing you to transmit the life, air, and energy of your instrument and performance more faithfully.

All that said, preamps are equally useful on electric instruments, and on basses in particular, allowing players to add texture and ‘style’ their sound without diminishing low-end focus.

What a Preamp Gives the Player

A preamp ensures your signal is strong enough to overcome noise, but not so hot that it overloads the console, allowing for control over dynamics and gain structure, and helping manage problematic frequencies before they become issues, consistently, night after night.

That doesn’t just improve your sound, it simplifies everyone’s gig: Your FOH engineer has less to deal with; your band hears a more stable mix; and you can focus on performing instead of reacting to any problems the circumstances or setting may present.

The Real Challenges of Running Stereo Live

Why Pedals Don’t Naturally Work with Microphones

Power Problems on Stage? Here’s How to Fix Them Before They Start

While there are many things musicians, engineers, and techs should be aware of (and do) to avoid power problems in any music-making setting, investing in a surge protector/power conditioner designed specifically for our industry (as Radial’s Power Series are) is a good start.

Clean Power: The Foundation of a Reliable Rig

When managing electrical requirements for instruments, amplifiers, sound, and lighting systems, attention to detail has always been key. These days, however, with stages and studios populated with a huge amount of gear (including laptops, tablets, and smartphones) that’s highly sensitive to power surges and fluctuations, perhaps more than ever.

Virtually everyone in our business has experienced power problems: they’ve seen them (flickering screens), heard them (hum, buzz, EMI/RFI interference), and felt them (getting a shock – hopefully minor – from a mic, their amp, or other gear).

Power problems have multiple causes: gear that’s improperly grounded or not grounded at all, voltage sags – a temporary reduction in voltage caused by an increase in current demand and/or loose connections, phase loss – typically caused by blowing a fuse, broken, damaged wires or contacts, or mechanical failures. They can be a result of damaged power cables, poor cable management, loose connections, and faulty power supplies – to name just a few examples.

Another culprit is dirty power, typically a term used to describe a system that doesn’t provide power/electricity that conforms to the voltage and frequency in a given area (in North America, 120V at 60Hz), and is prone to fluctuations, surges, spikes, dips, and/or interference.

At the least, dirty power and other electrical issues can negatively impact how your gear performs, decrease its lifespan, damage or destroy it. There’s also the risk of losing data (be it a fantastic take you just laid down or the painstaking programming you’ve done to get that fantastic take) and all the noise, hum, and hiss that comes from EMI (electromagnetic interference) and RFI (radio frequency interference).

Safety First

The show must go on is a laudable attitude to have, but when it comes to electrical hazards, the show is no longer the priority. Safety is.

Electricity doesn’t care what your role is on a show or in a session. The potential consequences of ‘bad’ power are bad for everyone – the danger, however, can be mitigated by adhering to standard electrical safety practices, including:

Using separate circuits as needed (particularly for audio and lighting).

Ensuring your gear is properly grounded and electrical loads are balanced, and that any power problems that do present themselves are dealt with quickly and comprehensively.

Checking plugs, power cables, and power connections regularly for damage.

Storing and transporting power cables properly – avoiding coiling cables tightly, knotting them, and using the ‘over-under’ method to deal with loose cables.

Doing your research: Has the venue, festival, equipment provider, the building, or the studio you’re recording in laissez-faire about electrics? Have you, or others, had issues at the gig or facility before?

Eyeballing electrical infrastructure for obvious issues. For example, an extension cord stapled to a wall to extend power from one place to another, missing ground pins, cracked or loose outlets.

Ensuring cables are deployed safely and securely, using cable ramps, for example, to prevent the accidental disconnection of, or damage to, power cables.

Adding a voltmeter (VOM) or digital multimeter (DMM) to your kit to diagnose electrical issues and validate voltage levels.

Using surge protectors and power conditioners to deal with voltage sags, spikes, surges, electrical interference, and noise.

Calling attention to power problems, diagnosing them, and addressing them immediately.

If you do see, hear, or feel something, call it out: ‘Oops, got a bit of a shock there – oh well’ is not an ideal way of dealing with potential issues. And, ‘Ah, that happens sometimes’ is not an appropriate response when issues do arise. Draw attention to and address the issue immediately.

Get ahead of power problems with the right gear

Surge protectors, as the name implies, protect your devices from power surges; essentially taking the electrical bullet for your gear via a metal oxide varistor (MOV), which allows stable and steady current to pass, prevents damage from power surges and spikes, and, if necessary, sacrifices itself when things get really out of hand.

Power conditioners offer additional features beyond surge protection, such as the ability to filter out or reduce noise and interference that diminishes audio quality.

Remember, these devices are constantly working to keep you and your equipment safe. They can and do provide years of peace of mind and trouble-free use, but eventually they’ll need to be replaced. If they take a substantial enough hit, immediately.

The Modern Stage Reality

As much as engineers may try to get a grip on what’s coming their way ahead of time, last-minute changes – be they in who’s running the gear, what gear they’re running, and how hot (or not) those sources may be, has always been as much a part of live events as sweaty cheese plates and dubiously warm deli trays.

For engineers, having the right tools to deal with whatever is thrown at them, in any scenario, is key to ensuring that, regardless of who shows up, with ‘Who knows what? Who knows when?’ On any given day, they can make it work.

Why “Just a DI” Isn’t Enough Anymore

If your plan for getting signal sorted depends heavily on a mess of adapters, you’re forgetting Murphy’s Law and the fact that any chain (signal or otherwise) is only as strong as its weakest link.

The truth is that consumer devices don’t necessarily output balanced, pro-level signals, which makes noise, interference, ground loops, and wildly varying levels more likely to be an issue than not. A little saturation on an analogue source, well, it’s fair to call that warmth – but on a digital signal? Not so much.

That’s not only why multimedia DIs exist, it’s also why, on sources such as we’re describing, they’re also a better option than a standard DI. Think of it this way: a chain of adapters is like ‘triage’, whereas a purpose-built device with the exact connections and functionality is a full-on cure.

Beyond that, as the expectations for audio engineers grow to encompass more sources, more technology, and often more roles to fill, the quicker the fix, the smoother the gig. Swapping out DIs or tracking down noise may be part of the job, but the less time spent doing so, the more fluid the workflow is for all concerned, and the easier your day will be.

In other words, when inputs behave, everyone can focus on what they’re there to do, and not what’s standing between them and doing it: musicians on performance, engineers on the mix, and everybody else on having a good time.

Level Meets Color: A Simple Panel with a Lot Going On

Level acts as both input trim and drive going into the unit’s opto compressor, transformers, and Color stage. Cranking it up raises the level but also controls how hard a signal hits the HDI’s opto compressor, transformers, and Color stage.

Small Color knob adjustments allow you to go from ultra-clean transparency to harmonically rich tones with amp-like saturation.

With Color set lower, Level behaves like a straightforward gain control.

To keep things musical and consistent, it helps to approach the HDI with a simple gain staging routine:

Set instrument output to an optimal range.

Bring up Level until the transient’s attack and overall loudness are where you want them.

Set Color to taste for the amount of breakup and harmonic character you’re after.

During recording sessions, the more options you can capture, quickly and cleanly when tracking, the more likely you’ll capture a mix-ready tone. That’s why many guitarists prefer a hybrid rig, incorporating amp/pedal simulators, DAW plug-ins, and analogue amplifiers and pedals.

Analogue pedals provide warmth, dynamic response, and tactile control, while amp sims deliver consistent, easily recallable tones with endless variety – the best of both worlds in terms of flexibility and authenticity.
