We’re honoured to announce that Radial’s Power-1 has been named as a finalist for the 38^th Annual NAMM Technical Excellence & Creativity (TEC) Awards in the ‘Production Essentials’ category. Presented at The NAMM Show, the NAMM TEC Awards are bestowed annually in celebration of the pro audio community by recognizing the individuals, companies, and technical innovations behind today’s sound recordings, live performances, films, television, video games, and other media.

The announcement follows a four-month call for entries of standout technical products and projects that have made a significant impact on modern sound and music. A panel of respected industry voters from pro audio publications, as well as members of professional music, technical and creative organizations, along with select NAMM members, carefully evaluated each entry before selecting the Power-1 as a finalist.

ABOUT THE POWER-1

The Power-1 is Radial’s introduction into the world of Power Conditioners, taking our reputation for reliability and rugged build quality and applying it to power supplies. The Power-1 gives musicians, engineers, producers, studio owners, commercial facilities, and anyone working with valuable electronic equipment protection from power surges that can damage or destroy music equipment instantaneously.

Featuring eight rear panel outlets are provided (four with wall-wart spacing to accommodate any PSU size), along with three front panel outlets and a USB charging port to easily power personal devices. A heavy-duty power on/off switch, rugged outlet connectors, and steel construction ensure that the Power-1 performs night after night without fail.

The Power-1 takes Radial’s reputation for reliability and rugged build quality and applies it to power supplies. Musicians, producers, and techs from all over the world know if they plug an audio cable into a device with the Radial logo on it, they’re guaranteed consistent, high quality sound. Now they can get that same feeling when they plug a power cord into the Power-1.

It’s common for anyone working in audio to amass a collection of gear worth thousands of dollars, which makes it imperative to protect that investment. A power surge can wreak havoc on delicate electronic components, and a spike of even a few volts can irreparably fry a circuit board. Even in the best facilities, accidents can still happen, which is why using a power conditioner with built-in protection is so important.

Radial’s aim with the Power-1 was to design a unit that a user can plug in anywhere with the confidence that their gear will be protected. This device provides significant advantages in performance, along with useful added features, to give amateurs and pros alike a source of clean, noiseless power. This is a power conditioner that will fulfill the everyday needs of gigging musicians, small to medium sized venues, studios, worship venues and commercial spaces.

As with all their products, Radial have sourced quality components that will stand up to anything that might get thrown at them. The MOV (Metal Oxide Varistor) inside each unit reacts to spikes in voltage and ‘takes the hit’ immediately, absorbing the excess instead of the instruments and gear you cherish. Extra attention has been paid to this critical component, and the premium MOVs used in the Power-1 were chosen to offer better thermal protection, and a longer lifespan, than cheaper alternatives. For an extra level of protection, a 15A circuit breaker is also included, shutting off when current exceeds that limit.

It’s not just protection that the Power-1 offers. Interference is the bane of front of house engineers everywhere, and the number of external factors that can affect power, especially in a mixed use venue, are endless. Overhead power cables, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi signals, security cameras, microwaves… the list goes on. The Power-1’s built-in RF filter makes sure these signals are kept out of the power line, and out of the signal chain, all without affecting tone in the slightest. Musicians using the Power-1 won’t have worry about their amps picking up local radio stations any more.

In designing the Power-1, Radial carefully considered every aspect of use, to create a unit that’s a step up from a run-of-the-mill powerstrip. Several of the front and rear panel outlets on the Power-1 have additional spacing between them to accommodate wall-wart style power supplies, providing a simple but effective ergonomic benefit. Meanwhile, the easy access outlets on the front will supply power when the unit is switched off, handy when you need to quickly plug in a device and don’t want to power up the whole rack. A front-mounted USB outlet adds an extra power source for smaller devices, such as phones. And needless to say, the Power-1 has the rugged build quality that you’d expect from a Radial product. It can be rack-mounted and will stand up to years on the road.

The Power-1 is Radial’s first foray into the world of power, with more to come.

The Canadian parliament needed a preamplifier that would deliver the most natural and uncolored sound possible, while being able to handle extreme dynamics without distortion. Canadian politics can get very lively during debate period, particularly during the question and answer sessions. This means that they had to deliver great performance whether confronted with a whisper or a fist banging on a bench. As these sessions are recorded and broadcast to the Canadian media, minimal noise was of primary concern.

Before the product was packaged, each preamp and Workhorse mixer-rack was individually tested to cover a whole range of criteria to ensure it met the required specifications. The racks were then assembled and put on pallets so that they could be installed immediately with as little delay at the receiving end as possible.

The Radial Jensen^® Twin-Servo & 500 series preamplifier is an updated version of what may well be the most spectacular preamp ever made.

Originally developed by industry icon Deane Jensen in 1988, the Twin-Servo 500 is an adaptation that fits the popular 500 series format. The design begins with the legendary performance of two 100% discrete 990 op-amps cascaded in tandem to deliver 60dB of gain with less than 1/10th the distortion and twice the bandwidth of a single stage design. This maximizes the gain-margin so that no matter what the input, the lowest possible distortion will be realized. This also reduces noise at mid and low levels, a critical advantage for those that record with a wide dynamic range. In order to minimize phase distortion and retain the delicate balance of fundamentals with harmonics, all capacitors have been removed from the audio signal path and replaced by two DC servo feedback circuits. This not only reduces low-frequency noise, but also eliminates the ugly distortions associated with electrolytic capacitors that are especially degrading to low-level microphone signals when used to block phantom power in transformerless designs. To deliver the widest possible bandwidth, Jensen transformers are placed at both the input and output producing a frequency response that extends from 0.2Hz to 150kHz. The transformers further benefit from unmatched common-mode noise rejection from offending devices such as power supplies, light dimmers and motors that may be connected to the same power service.

Features include a convenient front-panel Neutrik combo connector with choice of XLR and ¼” inputs, a dual-gang potentiometer for level adjustment along with a 10 segment LED meter for signal management. This is supplemented with a 180° polarity reverse switch that toggles the absolute phase, a gentle high-pass filter to eliminate excessive resonance, a -15dB pad to prevent overload, and a 48V phantom power activation switch with soft-start to eliminate popping from turning on microphones or accidental connections.

An updated version of the popular JX44, the V2 allows you to combine 4 instrument inputs with 4 amp outputs, and includes a bunch of helpful features for maximum switching flexibility. A stereo FX loop, a wealth of footswitch control options (including MIDI), an in-built SGI line driver, amongst others, mean there are few switching situations the unit won’t be able to assist with.

Meanwhile, the PZ-Pro is nominated in the ‘Musical Instrument Amplification & Effects’ category. The 2-channel acoustic pre-amp is a complete ‘Swiss Army Knife’ for acoustic performers, combining a DI with a versatile switcher, and also incorporates a mic input, in-depth EQ options and an FX loop.

The TEC Awards are amongst the most prestigious in the music tech industry. Since their inception in 1985, Radial have appeared on the nominees list numerous times, with the Workhorse WR8 taking home the ‘Signal Processing Technology/Hardware’ award in 2011.
