The Hidden Work Behind Every Show

There’s no such thing as a perfect show. Every live performance and even live sound itself involves compromise.

You do the best you can to meet any challenges the venue presents: with the tools and crew you work with, by applying your knowledge and experience to get the best possible result, which is an audience that feels like they’ve seen a perfect show. The kind of show where, even if something does go wrong, the audience never realizes it.

Preparing Before the Show

To get that result (whether you’re mixing FOH or monitors), preparing for any eventuality ASAP is critical: building simple, reliable, and repeatable signal paths; labeling everything; reducing complexity; carrying backups for anything that might fail, and testing everything daily. So that potential problems, small or large, are addressed and prevented.

The first steps: familiarizing yourself with the artist’s music, how they want it to sound live, their technical rider, and the gear and systems each performer uses on stage.

Next: fix what you can before it fails. There are two parts to this: identifying and eliminating any potential points of failure from the source on out and recommending changes to the band’s gear and technical rider that could cause problems.

How effectively you can do that obviously depends on the time allotted for pre-production and how willing the artist (and/or management) is to make those changes. Cost is always a consideration, and musicians are often reluctant to alter their stage setup if it works for them, even if it’s not as reliable as you’d like.

Again, everything is a compromise.

Troubleshooting Under Pressure

Now that you know what you’re up against, you can develop a plan and workarounds for issues you know will, or might, crop up (and for those you dearly hope won’t).

The more prepared you are, the better you can troubleshoot when the pressure’s on. And the pressure is always on: during shows, but also before, after, or on a travel or off day.

Gear doesn’t care if you had other plans. Venues aren’t always completely transparent about (or aware of) any on-site issues (pre-existing or brand-spanking new).

Fixing what’s broken or could break isn’t something you want to deal with on show day. That’s why you thoroughly advanced the show: you already know the venue is prone to RFI or EMI interference, a line array element on the right-side hang is dodgy, and there are a few bad channels on the snake running from the stage to FOH. Or that the venue just got a new monitor and/or FOH desk that A) they’re still fine-tuning routing for, and B) you don’t have a file for.

You can deal with that because everything you can control is sorted and planned for; every system you’re deploying is reliable, racked up and ready to go, with spares on hand, and redundancy in place.

In short, you can troubleshoot without anyone in the audience (and ideally anyone in the band) knowing something went sideways.

Reliability Over Complexity

Let’s revisit those potential failure points we mentioned earlier. The ideal way to deal with them is to eliminate as many as possible. That’s why reliability wins over complexity every time, with every system.

When it comes to signal flow, cable management, pristine, predictable sound reproduction, and ensuring the true tone of each player and the entire band comes across without compromise, having the right tools for the job is key.

Traveling light is sensible, but not at the expense of sound and reliability. Having multiple workhorse DIs like Radial’s JDI on hand doesn’t hurt, but if a source requires an instrument- or task-specific box, be it a DI, preamp, FX unit, line isolator or signal transport system to sound its best, without fail, trading a bit of space for peace of mind is a small price to pay.

Experienced engineers (and players) deploy rugged gear that does what it’s supposed to, well. They also treat ‘all-in-one’ devices that promise the world with a degree of skepticism.

Complex, multi-function devices aren’t inherently bad. But devices that solve specific challenges make diagnosing and fixing issues on the fly easier and have fewer failure points.

That’s particularly important when choosing a DI: determining whether you need an active or passive DI, mono or stereo, if a source-specific box for acoustic or electric guitars/basses or digital sources like laptops/playback, and what DI is best for high-output sources, and for preserving signal integrity and tone over long cable runs.

Eliminating Common Problems

So, what kind of issues are we talking about, why do they happen, and how do you deal with them?

Let’s look at a few of the most common scenarios:

Starting at the source, your power source. Dirty power and damaged or consumer-grade power bars are problematic on- and off-stage, increasing the potential for hum, buzz, and EMI/RFI interference.

Pro-level power supplies, like Radial’s Power Series, not only do they help keep your signal clean; they also help keep you and your gear safe from electrical damage.

From power infrastructure and stage constraints to system issues and the chops of the in-house crew, every venue introduces unknown variables. That’s why pro engineers often carry ‘just in case’ utility tools; tools they may or may not need, but are definitely handy.

Then there’s hum and ground loops: annoying, persistent, but manageable with the right gear. A high-quality DI allows you to cleanly interface with the PA without altering your tone. Backup Plans

Tape Op Magazine Reviews the SGI Stereo

The following review by Geoff Stanfield was originally published in the June/July 2026 edition of Tape Op Magazine.

Radial Engineering has made built-to-last solutions that meet everyday studio and live needs for decades, and their new SGI Stereo instrument line driver – designed primarily for guitar and bass – is another excellent example. The SGI Stereo lets you drive two unbalanced, low-level instrument signals up to 300 feet via a CAT5 Ethernet cable without noise or signal loss. It is designed for use on stage or in the studio. Long cable runs fed by instrument pickups (even via stompboxes) can lose clarity and pick up electronic interference; a problem Radial’s SGI products help solve. With this new addition, the SGI system now comes in single-channel SGI (via XLR) and SGI Stereo (via CAT5) versions. The SGI Stereo consists of transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX) boxes that each sport a pair of Jensen transformers. The TX has an included 15V power supply but can run on pedalboard power from 9V to 18V. The RX also has a ground lift for both channels and a 180-degree phase inversion button. The TX also has handy 1/4-inch Thru options. The devices have the same form factor as the JDI and J48 direct boxes in the Radial line. The claimed frequency response is 20 Hz to 18 kHz +/-1 dB with a very low total harmonic distortion. Connectors are unbalanced 1/4-inch, and the CAT5 jacks are also compatible with locking Neutrik etherCON connectors.

A typical use case scenario would be a path like this: guitar/bass>effects pedals (if used)>SGI Stereo TX>CAT5 cable>SGI Stereo RX>amp(s). Pedals can also go between the RX and the amplifier instead of in front of the whole chain. I used the SGI Stereo in both stereo and mono configurations, and I immediately thought of two scenarios where I could put it to work. The first was running from my pedals in the control room out to an amp in the live room. For the purposes of A/B-ing, I set up runs with and without the SGI. The total run was around 75 feet from my spot in the control room, through and under several doors, to the amps at the far end of the live room. Not close to the 300 feet the SGI Stereo can handle, but still significant enough to make signal degradation a potential issue. The SGI Stereo was the clear favorite of the two options. Even using high-quality guitar cables for the non-SGI path, I found the SGI Stereo to be cleaner, clearer, and noise-free. We quickly ditched the standard run and sent the signal from the RX side of the SGI to both amps instead of using just the left/mono side, and I didn’t notice any loss of tone in doing so.

My other test involved a longer run from my home studio/barn control room, across the driveway, and into the house’s living room. I have always thought about recording guitars in the house, as the room has a nice natural tone, but I have been hesitant due to the length of the cable run. Again, I set up two paths. One used jumpered-together, super long cables that I purchased years ago for my kid’s elementary school play that I was roped into doing sound for (“You’re a sound guy, right?”). That path went into an old ’70s Marshall 2×12 combo. For the other, I connected the two SGI Stereo units using a 100-foot CAT5 cable, patched my guitar into some pedals, and then into the SGI Stereo’s TX. I ran the output from the receiver to two amps (a Vox AC30 and a Fender Princeton Reverb) in the living room. The first (non-SGI) path was pretty noisy. It was still somewhat usable, but it had significant hum issues. With the SGI Stereo, the signal was strong, with no crosstalk or extra noise other than the normal crackling of the AC30’s faulty tubes. For kicks, I ditched the first path and swapped out the AC30 for the Marshall. It was remarkably cleaner using the SGI Stereo.

Like everything Radial Engineering makes, the SGI Stereo is built like a tank and will be around long after I kick the bucket. The SGI Stereo will interface with many Radial products, but understand that it is not a DI or a re-amping device. As with many of the company’s products, it does a specific job and does it very well!

Whether it’s because your gig has changed (or changes constantly), your rig evolves: new pedals, a second amp, an interface, an amp sim; the possibilities are endless.

Each addition adds functionality and expands your options on stage, but can create unintended complications. When adding those options, it’s important to consider the most effective way to route signals to ensure pristine sound reproduction and a fluid on-stage or in-studio workflow.

Routing isn’t just about getting signals from point A to point B. It’s about what happens to them along the way and how you route them in real-time, during performance.

Adding a tool that helps you streamline and manage routing helps reduce complexity substantially.

Ensuring Reliability & Redundancy, Without Complexity

Feature creep isn’t something that just applies to a device or software platform. Taken as a whole, your system, from the instrument out, offers you plenty of opportunities to add elements, resulting in feature creep on a system level.

Every extra feature or device adds potential points of failure; additional cabling and power supplies, the potential for noise, interference, and the alteration of your signature sound.

It also means you have more to deal with and think about on stage. Developing ‘muscle memory’ isn’t just helpful in playing your instrument but also in making all the changes to your settings, patches, and so forth during performances.

How to manage that? Let’s take a look at some common routing scenarios and how Radial’s BigShot line of passive True-Bypass switchers can help streamline routing and workflow.

Routing Problem #1: Switching Between Amps

The most typical scenario here is a setup where you’re sending one source to two amps and need to switch between and/or blend the sound of those amps. Even if both amps are connected to the same power source and you’ve done everything possible to eliminate noise, you may still end up with hum and buzz in one or both amps and/or unwanted alterations to the true tone of your instrument.

Obviously, physically adjusting the level of your amps mid-performance isn’t ideal. You could jury-rig a solution using a Y-cable, but it’s better to address all the issues via a single solution.

Solution: BigShot ABY

The BigShot ABY is a true-bypass ABY switcher featuring two latching footswitches for switching between or running two amps simultaneously. Its second output offers a ground lift and isolation transformer that, when engaged, eliminates ground loop noise. Additionally, a 180° polarity reverse switch corrects phase and frequency cancellation issues. So you can be confident your true tone will come across unaltered. Routing Problem #2: Switching Between Instruments

Using one amp and need to switch between two instruments?

The blunt force approach is adding an amp or physically unplugging one instrument and plugging in another. That works, but it increases the potential for failure and noise, and adds to your channel count (which can be problematic when console real estate at Monitors or FOH is an issue).

It also means you have to mute or turn your amp’s volume up and down to avoid pops and clicks, and adjust your instrument level each time you transition between one instrument and the next.

Solution: BigShot i/o

Routing Problem #3: Switching Between Two FX Pedal Chains

Nobody wants to look like they’re tap dancing when making changes on their pedalboard while the band and crowd wait for them to sort themselves out. It’s not a good look from the stage or audience perspective and ups the chance of human error, noise, and, frankly, distracting yourself from the job at hand.

Solution: BigShot EFX

The BigShot EFX provides fixed infrastructure for your FX rig, allowing you to set up two separate effects loops and insert them into your pedal chain as and when needed.

It simplifies your setup. Letting you use multiple pedals in different combinations and switch between them with a single stomp, seamlessly and silently. Grouping, for example, distortion and similar pedals on one chain, and time-based FX on another, and then switching or blending them easily; no tap shoes required.

That means less likelihood of hitting the wrong pedal or sequence of pedals and, with vintage pedals that are more likely to cause noise inherently, the ability to engage them only when needed – putting them in True-Bypass mode for a straight wire connection, eliminating the need to put up with a 60-cycle hum for the entire show, or to add a buffer that may alter your sound.
